Hg10 Policy

General information

Hg10 is an open-source XMPP client for BlackBerry 10. It enables you to connect to any server which use the XMPP protocol. This includes Google Hangout, Facebook messenger, Jabber, ...
The main focus of this application is Google Hangout, however some support for Facebook messenger is also provided.

Access to the source code:

The application is an open-source project under the GNU GPL licence. You can access to the code, edit it, modify it.

Privacy:

Using this application, you can connect to your Google account. These are sensitive data. This application will never share any private information. All your data always stay on your device. Your data won't be analysed, nor processed by this application. The code of the application is open-source so you can check yourself what it does. No connection will never be made between your different accounts (Dropbox, Google). The author of the application have no interest in your private data. Any access to your accounts is only meant to allow you to better interact with the service on which you are connected. Remember, most of the asked permissions are optional, during the login process you will be able to choose the permissions you allow to this application.

This application deal with different kind of permissions:

Permission asked for your BlackBerry(c) device

The application will request:

  • Access to your files is only for uploading your images, documents, ... to Dropbox(c) or Google Drive and share the url to your contact. Rejecting it will only affect the file attachment feature.
  • Headless: Headless permission is required for this application: the core application is in the headless process. Rejecting it would result in a non-working application
  • Microphone: The application ask you to access to you microphone to enable you to record a voice message which will be uploaded to your Dropbox(c) account and finally shared with the person you are talking with. If you reject it, it will only affect he ability to send voice messages.

Permission asked for Google Hangout

The access to your gmail account was asked during the login. Access to email is only meant to retrieve instant message's history which are stored on your Google account. Only READ access is provided, NO modification can be done on your email account from the application. No data is send to any third party.
For your information, the handling of history is done by requesting the following request to Google: "is:chat friend_name". You can try it yourself on the Gmail website.

Permission asked for Dropbox

The access to your Dropbox account can be provided into the settings. This is not mandatory and does not affect the instant messaging service. Access to Dropbox is only meant to host your files, images... on your Dropbox account. The application has only access to a restricted folder on your Dropbox account (Application/Hg10). For privacy reason, the author (me), do not want to go beyond this folder. Files stored in this folder are only accessible by you, and in case you share a file, the persons who receive the link from you.

Permission asked for Google Drive

During the login you will be able to choose between different level of permissions for Google Drive. If you choose to give access to all your files, you will be able to manage them inside the application. With a restricted access, the application will only be able to use the files it has created. Rejecting all access deny the application to access to your files. In any case, the application will not share any information on your files with any third party.
